Cheryl L. Swope, M.Ed.

All because my daughter Michelle – who has autism, learning disabilities, schizophrenia, borderline intellectual disability, and various medical conditions – said, “Mom, I want my story to help other children like me….

Cheryl Swope, M.Ed. is the author of Simply Classical: A Beautiful Education for Any Child (Memoria Press) and creator of the award-winning Simply Classical Curriculum (Memoria Press), 34-week packages of all-in-one, open-and-go materials and lesson plans designed especially for children with special learning needs (autism, specific learning disabilities, intellectual disability, language and sensory issues, ADHD and more). The unique Simply Classical Curriculum blends therapeutic, incremental, multi-sensory teaching strategies with beautiful books.

Cheryl and her husband homeschooled their adopted twins (both with autism, learning disabilities, and severe mental illness) from the children’s infancy through high school. The children’s love of history, literature, and Latin persuaded Cheryl of the benefits an excellent (i.e., classical) education for any child. Her life’s work has become helping others bring truth, goodness, and beauty to any child. The Simply Classical Curriculum enables parents to teach their own children beginning from a skill level of age 2. More levels are releasing each year.

With a master’s degree in special education, lifetime K-12 state teaching certificate in Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders, prior to homeschooling Cheryl helped implement an innovative inclusion program among twelve elementary schools in a public school district, spoken at her state’s Council for Exceptional Children Conference, led I.E.P. meetings, conducted assessments on behalf of children with special needs, studied in a university Occupational Therapy program, tutored children with specific learning disabilities, worked five summers in a camp for inner city children, and taught in early childhood classrooms and private special school summer programs. Yet her most profound education came through homeschooling her adopted twins K-12.

Cheryl now serves as writer and editor for the new (free!) Simply Classical Journal — a new magazine for anyone who parents or teaches a child with special needs — writer for The Classical Teacher, editor of the Classical Lutheran Education Journal, Vice Chair of SPED Homeschool Board of Directors, and permanent member of the Board of Directors for the Consortium for Classical Lutheran Education.

Cheryl lives with her husband of more than 25 years and with twins Michael and Michelle, now young adults, in a woodsy neighborhood where they can all take long walks, swim in the lake, grow greens in a backyard garden, and stargaze on blankets in the open fields.
